As school comes to an end and summer vacation begins for kids, some parents are left asking, “What is my child going to do all summer long?” One option that some parents opt into is summer camp.

Essentially, your child could attend two different types of camps: “day camp” or “sleep-away camp.” At a day camp, the child would spend 8-9 hours there and then come home in the evening time, just long enough for a parent to go to and come back from work. Then you have sleep-away camps, where your child can spend the night, often times in a cabin with other camp mates.

No matter what type of summer camp you choose for your child, there are many benefits that come along with going to camp.

• Teaching teamwork and independence: Camp gives your children the opportunity to mingle and work with not just other kids, but with mentors and camp counselors that continue to hone their social skills. At the same time, your child will gain independence by being away from home and on their own..
• Staying physically fit: It’s very easy for a child to sit at home all summer watching TV and playing on his or her iPad. At camp, there’s no chance of that happening. Depending on the weather and type of camp they attend, they will most likely spend most of their time outside either playing sports with other kids or exploring nature. Lots of camp activities are built around physical activity which will help keep your child healthy during their growing years.
• Feeling a sense of belonging: It’s easy during the summer time for a child to become bored and for them to feel left out because they don’t see their friends every day and their parents are away at work. At camp, they normally emphasize a “family environment” among the campers, and this can help a child feel a sense of belonging. If you find your child to be quiet and reserved, they can feel more comfortable around other children their own age.

Some of us went to prom a few years ago. For others, it’s been ages! Nonetheless, prom is always a fun event that helps to wrap up the school year and celebrate the upcoming summer vacation.

But the preparation can be a headache at times. Trying to figure out what you’re going to wear, what transportation you’re going to use to get there, and the plans afterwards are all things that can be stressful for not only the students attending, but for their parents as well.

After all of that is said and done, the end result is usually satisfied students and a million and one photos from the event.

At the age of 12, every afternoon when I got off the bus and 5 A.M. on the weekends, I was reminded of my two mile paper route that lie ahead. I recollect back to my shiny, blue, spray painted wagon filled with rolled up news from around the world.

I quickly learned the value of being on time. When I committed to the job, one of the requirements was to have the paper delivered by 5 P.M. on the weekdays and 8 A.M. on the weekends. If it was raining, the paper had to be delivered on time. If I had to trek through 8 inches of snow, the paper had to be delivered on time. If it was freezing cold or sweltering with heat outside, you guessed it, the paper still had to be delivered on time.

I followed three simple rules when I did my route. Arrive on time, treat people the way you want to be treated, and deliver a quality product. As I did these three simple things I found that my paper route began to grow and eventually doubled.

Now keep in mind, I wasn’t spending any dollar amount on advertising. I didn’t beg people to join and I wasn’t giving the paper away for free. I relied strictly on referrals and word of mouth. I knew that if I followed those three simple things my route would continue to grow eventually resulting in more money in my pocket.

What I learned from that paper route can be translated into our careers today. Arrive on time to the pickup, treat students, teachers and parents the way we want to be treated, and drive safely. If we follow these steps we can easily continue to grow our customer base which will result in a need for more drivers.
