Operation Safety: Making Sure We Understand Who We Share the Roads With

As school time is quickly approaching, we need to be mindful of how some of our daily routines will be altered, whether or not we have children that attend school or not.

One important topic that needs to be addressed prior to school starting is the increased amount of School Buses that will be on the roads while you are commuting to and from your destinations in the morning and afternoon. When it comes to School Bus and children’s safety, do you know the steps to ensure children are not in danger while you are driving?

Here a few reminders when you see a School Bus on the road and children loading and unloading:

  • Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children
  • If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop
  • The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus
  • Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks

Remember, it is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

Everyone have a safe and exciting time returning back to school!
