Becoming a School Bus Driver sounds like hard work

This is something we hear too often from people when in fact becoming a school bus driver is not very difficult at all!

When hiring a school bus driver, our recruiter usually separates candidates into two categories: candidates with their CDL and candidates that doDSC05259 (2)n’t have their CDL.

CDL (stands for “Commercial Driver’s License”) is a driver’s license required in the United States to operate any type of vehicle. weighing 26,001 pounds, or 10,001 pounds with any type of trailer towed.

For candidates that have their CDL

They must have the following endorsements to be a school bus driver:

  • P – Passenger: For vehicles which are designed to carry 16 or more people (including the driver).
  • S – School Bus: For commercial motor vehicles used to transport pre-primary, primary, or secondary school students from home to school, school to home, or to and from school-sponsored events.

For candidates that don’t have their CDL

Candidates that do not have a CDL must obtain a CDL Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) from Secretary of State. To get your TIP, you must pass a vision and skills test. A TIP is needed to train on the road (under the supervision of a driver with their CDL) to obtain your actual CDL.

Any branch of Secretary of State has the necessary information to pass the TIP test or to receive the endorsements on your CDL.

We help at Trinity Transportation!

Trinity Transportation offers training for both TIP and non-TIP holders. If you are starting fresh, Trinity holds monthly classes that consist of 3 days training to help potential drivers obtain their TIP.

Once you pass the test and obtain the CDL TIP, you are able to train on the road! If hired, Trinity pays you while you train to obtain your regular CDL.

Operation Safety: Making Sure We Understand Who We Share the Roads With

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

As school time is quickly approaching, we need to be mindful of how some of our daily routines will be altered, whether or not we have children that attend school or not.

One important topic that needs to be addressed prior to school starting is the increased amount of School Buses that will be on the roads while you are commuting to and from your destinations in the morning and afternoon. When it comes to School Bus and children’s safety, do you know the steps to ensure children are not in danger while you are driving?

Here a few reminders when you see a School Bus on the road and children loading and unloading:

  • Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children
  • If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop
  • The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus
  • Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks

Remember, it is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.

Everyone have a safe and exciting time returning back to school!

Trinity Transportation Hosts 2 Day Back to School Meeting

Monday, August 17th, 2015

Chief Financial Officer Robert Bishop

Each year, Trinity Transportation has a “Back to School” meeting for all School Bus Drivers and Aides to get ready for the upcoming school year. Due to the expansion of the company,
Trinity hosted the meeting on 2 separate days so that they could accommodate all eligible employees. The meetings were held at Crystal Gardens in Southgate on August 13th and 14th.

The meeting started out with President and Owner Jerry Sheppard giving a rousing speech about how Trinity first began and how far it’s come over the last couple of decades. There were a lot of new drivers in the audience so Mr. Sheppard took the opportunity to explain how close knit of a company he wants Trinity to be.

The meeting continued with several of the executives giving speeches on customer service, important job policies for school bus drivers, and motivational characters who started in the city of Detroit. At the end of both days, employees got to play “Spin the Wheel”, where Trinity ended up raffling off over $1,000!

About 400 Trinity employees attended this event and it was a great opportunity for newly hired employees to get a taste of Trinity.
